to부정사가 보어 역할을 하는 것을「be to 용법」이라고 한다. 보어란 보충설명해 주는 말을 뜻하며 존재( ~이다, ~이 있다) 의 의미를 가진다.
I am a boy, 나는 소년이다. There is a book. 책이 한 권 있다.
마찬가지로「 be to ⓡ 」형태의 부정사가 위 예문에 쓰인 be 동사 처럼 존재의 의미를 담게 되는데 이것을 「be to 용법」또는「부정사의 서술적 용법 」 이라고 부른다.
(※ 참고) 서술적 용법과 대비되는 말로써 「한정적 용법」이 있다. 한정적 용법이란 꾸며주는 말(혹은 수식하는 말)이 있다. 쉬운 예로 형용사가 명사를 꾸며주는 것이 한정적 용법의 예이다. 보통 한정적 용법은 「~하는, ~할」 의 어미로 해석하며 서술적 용법은 위에서 설명한 것과 같이 「~이다. ~있다」 라고 해석한다.
be to 부정사의 용법은 아래와 같다.
① 예정/약속 : be expected / supposed / due / scheduled to (~할 예정이다, ~하기로 되어 있다)
They are to meet at six. 그들은 6시에 만날 예정이다. We are to have a party tonight. 우리는 오늘밤 파티를 할 예정이다.= We will have a party tonight. He is to make a speech next Monday. 그는 다음 주 월요일에 연설을 할 예정입니다. = He is due to make a speech next Monday. The meeting is to be held tomorrow. 미팅은 내일 있을 예정입니다. He is to arrive here this evening. 그는 오늘 저녁에 이곳에 도착할 예정입니다.
② 의무 : should, must (~해야 한다) You are to keep your promise. 너는 약속을 지켜야 한다. = You must keep your promise.You are to do the work. 너는 일을 해야 한다. You are to (=should) obey your parents. 너는 너의 부보님에게 복종해야 한다. You are to finish this work by seven. 너는 7시까지는 이 일을 마쳐야 한다. You are always to knock before you come in. 너는 들어오기 전에 항상 노크를 해야한다.
③ 가능 : can (~할 수 있다) Nothing was to be seen in the street. 거리에는 아무것도 볼 수 없었다. = Nothing could be seen in the street.My house is to (=can) be seen from the station. 나의 집은 역에서 보이지 않았다. Not a sound was to (=could) be heard in that house. 저 집 안에서는 아무것도 들을 수 없었다.
④ 의도/소원 : intend to (~하고자 하다) If you are succeed, you must study hard. 성공하려면 열심히 공부해야 한다. If you are to have good friends, you must be good. 만약 네가 좋은 친구를 가지려면 네가 좋아져야 한다.You must work hard if you are to succeed (=intend to succeed) .만약 네가 성공하려면 너는 일을 열심히 해야한다.
⑤ 운명 : be doomed/destined to (~할 운명이다) He was to be a lawyer. 그는 변호사가 될 운명이였다. He was never to see his country again. 그는결코 그의 고향으로 다시 돌아가지 못할 운명이였다.= He was doomed never to see his country again.

② We are gone to the movies this weekend.
③ We're go to the movies this weekend.
④ We are to go to the movies this weekend.
⑤ We are go to the movies this weekend.
